Well-Made but Performance is Compromised
Like all AIRE inflatable kayaks and canoes, the AIRE Traveler comes with the patented AIRECell floor and tube chambers made of 1100 denier base material (Material Weight Oz/Yd: 24/27), and offers two drain holes. It is easy to inflate and deflate, and stores well in an RV or in the trunk of a car.
Out on the water, the hull speed of the heavy 70-lb, broad-beamed AIRE Traveler inflatable canoe is adequate but slower than inflatable kayaks, and even some competitor canoes such as the Innova Vagabond which slices through the water with a narrower 38" beam.
The AIRE Traveler’s performance gets worse if it is loaded over 600 pounds, and that makes reviewers question the 750-lb rated capacity. (For comparison purposes, a 15' hard shell canoe will hold 1000 pounds and will likewise weigh around 75 to 80 pounds.) As for portage, let’s mention again that this inflatable weighs 70 pounds, and that’s without your gear, supplies, or any game you might bag.
Since the AIRE Traveler is not as sleek as a hard canoe, or even an inflatable kayak, it is a lot more work to paddle. Also, the high profile tends to catch the wind, so tracking will not be as easy as you’ll find in a touring or hybrid inflatable kayak. On the plus side, the Traveler has a thick 7" floor that is comfortable for kneeling while paddling if you don’t want to use the backless and bench-style seats. You can even leave the seats out of the canoe before putting in, which drops the weight of the AIRE Traveler to about 59 pounds.
Is This the Best Value for Your Money?
Two paddlers can easily handle this canoe, but going solo is not recommended since the 15' Traveler is difficult for even an experienced solo paddler to handle. You can order the optional $375 rowing frame – but rowing a canoe is ridiculous.
Despite the weight and the questionable load capacity, there’s no question that the AIRE Traveler inflatable canoe is a well-made canoe. Nevertheless, we feel you can shop around for a canoe that’s half the price of this one (such as the Seyvlor Colorado Canoe at under $500), or perhaps opt for a more versatile inflatable kayak. We feel that ordering a $2,100 canoe online – one that you have never tried out before – could be a very big mistake.
