The Upside of the Airis Sport

Walker Bay, which manufactures the Airis line, has been paying attention to user reviews of their kayaks and responded with some excellent changes in 2012. The newest incarnation of their popular Sport kayak hits a sweet spot for many casual as well as experienced users with an outstanding inflatable at a moderate price. They’ve also made the latest model more streamlined while keeping the 11’ length.

The air web, high pressure hull is made from a proprietary, seven layer polymer coated fabric that’s highly resistant to abrasions and tearing. It can be inflated to 6.5 psi, which gives you a much more rigid hull than most inflatable kayaks this size. The Airis Sport inflatable kayak is a single person, sit-on-top design that’s actually difficult to roll or tip, making it easy to get in and out of. You can even stand in it with relatively good stability, although we don’t recommend it.

A Few Quibbles

There’s so much to like in the Airis Sport that we hate to quibble over details, but there are a few minor things that you’ll notice. The seat length isn’t adjustable, which can pose a problem for some users who are on the short side. A few recent Airis Sport reviews noted that if you’re less than 5’4”, you won’t be able to use the foot pegs. The removable back rest is nice, but a bit on the flimsy side, although you can upgrade to a sturdier, more comfortable webbed backrest for relatively little money.

Excellent Investment for Day Trippers

Overall, the Airis Sport inflatable kayak is an outstanding value, particularly if you want a kayak that’s easy to carry on long hikes. It folds down to a small footprint and standard gear includes the pump, storage backpack, repair kit and back rest so that you don’t need to buy additional gear.
